Salsa program & Level guide

From first steps to deeper musicality.

Lux’s progressive Salsa program develops timing, technique, partner connection, and musicality. Students begin with Salsa On1, expand into On2, and advance as their skills become consistent—not according to a fixed timeline.
HOW IT WORKS

Build strong skills. Grow with intention.

New dancers start with Salsa On1, building coordination, rhythm, partner connection, and confidence. As those skills become consistent, students can transition to On2 and explore more complex partnerwork, styling, and musical interpretation.

Progress depends on readiness, previous experience, class attendance, practice, and time spent social dancing. Our instructors can help you determine where you’ll learn best. Visit the Group Classes page to see which levels are currently offered.
WHY WE TEACH ON1 AND ON2

Two timings. A more versatile dancer.

On1 and On2 share the same essential Salsa vocabulary but organize movement differently within the music. In On1, dancers generally emphasize their change of direction on beats one and five; in On2, that change occurs on beats two and six.

Training both helps dancers strengthen their understanding of Salsa rhythm, adapt to different partners, and participate in a wider range of dance communities.
Salsa On1
Beginner
Lux begins with On1 because its clear rhythmic framework offers an accessible way to learn timing, weight transfer, partner connection, and core Salsa vocabulary. For many new dancers, it provides an intuitive entry point into social dancing and a strong technical base for continued growth.
Salsa On2
Intermediate
Once dancers have developed consistent timing and technique, On2 introduces a different rhythmic emphasis and deeper exploration of musical phrasing. It helps students refine their body awareness, partner communication, musicality, and expression.

On2 is not reserved for advanced dancers. It is a natural next step for students who are comfortable with the fundamentals and ready to broaden their skills.
How to Transition to on2

A new timing—not a new beginning.

Moving from On1 to On2 doesn’t mean starting over. Your existing vocabulary, technique, and partnering skills still apply—you’re learning to place them within a different rhythm.
Quarterly Transition Intensives

Focused sessions in timing, musicality, and drills help On1 dancers establish a strong start On2.

Private Lessons or Mini-Groups

Personalized instruction helps you begin the transition, reinforce your timing, or catch up between intensives.

LEVEL GUIDE

Find the level where you can learn, grow, and be challenged.

Our program is structured so you can start at the right level and progress at your own pace. Advancement is based on mastery, not time, and these ranges are general benchmarks, not rules. Progress depends on how often you train, practice, and dance socially.
Beginner
Build your foundation in timing, rhythm, partner connection, basic turns, cross-body leads, direction changes, and hand variations. Classes focus on clear technique, confident movement, and becoming comfortable dancing with different partners.
Timing
0-6 months or 0-30 hours of Salsa experience
Intermediate
Expand your vocabulary through more intricate hand transitions, copas, checks, 360s, introductory double turns, and styling. The focus shifts toward greater precision, control, body awareness, and expression. Most dancers remain at this level for one to two years.
Timing
6-24 months or 30-100 hours of Salsa experience
Advanced
Bring strong technique together with artistry and playfulness through rapid direction changes, complex turns, advanced hand transitions, styling, balance, weight transfer, and nuanced partner communication.
Timing
24+ months or 100+ hours of Salsa On2 experience
